Guide for Teachers and Education Professionals

Leading Discussion Groups in the Classroom

This guide is the result of teamwork based on the conclusive results of action-based research conducted in elementary and secondary schools. The suggested activities were carried out in a variety of classroom settings (special needs, welcoming and regular).

The goal of discussion groups is to create a space where all students are allowed to express themselves openly on a specific topic: migration, differences, war, or death. The discussions allow members of the group to share their personal experiences, suffering, or thoughts in an atmosphere of trust and connection. Being able to share one’s history, identity, culture, and beliefs in complete safety helps build a positive outlook on life.

This guide is intended for all teachers and education professionals who wish to promote their students’ well-being and sense of belonging to the group.
